Variety: 100% Albarino
Region: Rias Baixas, Spain
Cost: $16 (SRP)

Winemaker’s Notes: Elegant lemon-yellow color, clean and glossy. It is concentrated on the nose with persistent quality aromas, recalling green apple and tropical fruit such as pineapple. The Albarino is long and lasting with a perfect acidity that matches its body, making the wine very pleasant.

My Review: I like Albarino – it reminds me of Virginia Viognier, which I don’t get to sip on as much anymore now that I live in North Carolina, so the chance to check out the 2016 Atlantis Albarino wasn’t one I wanted to pass on; summer whites are always in demand here in the South (at least in this house).

In the glass the wine showed nice lemon colors, and on the nose I picked up tropical fruit. In the mouth the wine showed just the right amount of acidity, which was balanced with a hint of creaminess, surprising given that the wine appears to have been done completely in stainless steel.

As the wine warmed and opened up I picked up notes of vanilla and cotton candy on the finish, balancing the tropical pineapple notes at the front of the wine.

I didn’t pair the wine with anything, opting instead to just sip on it by itself, but I think turkey burgers or chicken sausages on the grill would be a nice pairing with this wine. For $16 it’s a nice alternative to the Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio that I’m already seeing way too much of at the grills outside my apartment, so I do recommend this as a way to break the cycle this summer.

Editor’s Note: I received this wine as a free sample for review
