Winemaker’s Notes: Â Our 2011 Sauvignon Blanc’s citrus and tropical fruit character make it an easygoing wine to sip with friends. With round, full flavors of pineapple and lime, it makes a perfect complement to seafood. The wine’s bright style also pairs nicely with light summer salads and fresh appetizers such as oysters and crab cakes.
My Review: Â I don’t know about where you live, but here in Central Virginia my forecast has far too many triple digit numbers in it for my liking, which means crisp, light white wines are about to be incredibly in fashion at Casa Good Wine Guru. With that in mind, and because we were making some salmon for dinner, my wife and I opened up the bottle of 2011 Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi that I had chilling in the fridge.
The two best words to describe this wine are citrus and green. While the tasting notes may have advertised pineapple notes, I got lemon and lime on the nose and especially on the palate. The wine was crisp and clean and light, all of which appealed to me on a hot day, and the finish offered a green, herbaceous note that I’ve come to expect in Sauvignon Blanc that’s not from South America.
Our salmon had a bourbon glaze on it that my wife whipped up, and the crispness of the wine did a nice job of cutting through the subtle sweetness of the glaze. The wine probably would have shined more with a different flavoring to the fish, but I didn’t dislike it with what we did put on there. This wine certainly isn’t going to set the world on fire, or chance your opinion about Sauvignon Blanc, but for the price it’s a good value if you’re looking for a crisp white wine for hot days to share with friends.
