2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup

Governor's Cup

It’s that time of year again, when Virginia recognizes their own and awards a wine the Governor’s Cup. In the past there was a Governor’s Cup for red wines and one for white wines, with the red wine being presented in February in conjunction with the Virginia Wine Expo, and the white wine being presented in October in conjunction with Virginia Wine Month. This year that all changes. It’s one Governor’s Cup to rule them all…as it were.

Now, before I say who won the award last night, in case you don’t already know, here are the 12 Gold Medal Winners that were vying for the honor.

  • Bluestone Vineyard 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Delfosse Vineyards & Winery 2007 Meritage Blend
  • Jefferson Vineyards 2010 Cabernet Franc
  • Keswick Vineyards 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Keswick Vineyards 2010 Merlot
  • King Family Vineyards 2008 Meritage Blend
  • Potomac Point Winery 2009 Heritage Reserve Meritage Blend
  • Tarara Winery 2010 Honah Lee White Vinifera Blend
  • Trump Winery 2008 Kluge SP Blanc de Blanc Sparkling
  • Veritas 2010 Vintner’s Reserve Meritage Blend
  • White Hall Vineyards 2010 Gewurztraminer
  • Glen Manor’s 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage

The winner of the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Cup was Glen Manor for their 2009 Hodder Hill Meritage and I have to say that it was well deserved. I found the wine to be excellent and it’s definitely on my list to both visit in person and to get a few bottles of in the house.

In addition to the awards ceremony there were numerous vineyards beyond the medal winners pouring some of their Virginia wines, including the 2011 White Wine Winner, New Kent with their 2009 Reserve Chardonnay. All in all it was a great evening that I got to spend with friends and my wife and I’m already looking forward to next year’s ceremony and the growing reach of Virginia’s wine industry.

  1. It was great to see Jeff win and it is absolutely well deserved. Great juice made by a great guy. I thought the whole evening went incredibly well.

It was also great to see you afterwards and enjoy some of the Hodder Hill and over fine beverages.

    Cheers.
