Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Region: Monticello, Virginia (Monticello AVA)
Cost: $38.95 (SRP)
Tasting Notes: Initial notes of citrus fruit and green apple turning to more stone fruit with a floral undertone. The palate has vibrant acidity, complementing the influence of oak fermentation and aging. A full bodied style of wine that may see more years in the bottle.
My Review: The Virginia Governor’s Cup was back in February, and in April I had the chance to try some of the wines that made the “Governor’s Case;” the top 12 wines from the competition as ranked by the tasters.
The first of the 6 that I received, and the only white that wasn’t a dessert wine, was the 2022 Mountain & Vine Vineyards Chardonnay.
In the glass the wine golden straw color; not unexpected given that the wine was fermented in neutral French Oak Barrels and went through full malolactic fermentation. On the nose I got aromas of lemon curd and citrus, both of which carried through to the palate. The wine had good body, and while it was maybe a touch over-oaked for my taste, it wasn’t used as a crutch by any stretch, and even those that don’t like oak may find this enjoyable with the right pairing.
I paired the wine with chores and charcuterie on a warm Sunday afternoon, but I think it would go well with a light Limone orzo or anything with a bit of acid that could help balance out the richness of the wine from the oak.
Overall I enjoyed the wine. I wouldn’t hesitate to order if I saw it on a wine list, but I would want to make sure that I paired it with the right food; less of a casual sipper and more of a dinner wine (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Editor’s Note: I received this wine as a free sample for review.
